From the time the first Ohio State Fair was held in 1850 to today, many people have picked a favorite tradition. A few are listed below. What is yours? Tell us on Facebook at

Butter cow and sculpture
From the first appearance of the butter cow and calf in 1903, these sculptures made of butter have been a highlight for Fair visitors. New cow and calf sculptures, as well as a surprise sculpture, are created each year. In 2010, a team of artists worked 392 hours and used one ton of butter (approximately 8,000 sticks) to create the masterpiece. After the Fair, the butter is donated to a university at which students use the butter to make biodiesel.

The Ohio State Fair is home to one of the world’s longest portable sky rides, extending nearly one-half mile across the grounds, built in 1969.

Giant Slide
This enormous yellow slide premiered at the Ohio State Fair in 1969. It stands 45 feet tall and is 144 feet long. Riders of all ages trek up 105 stairs before traveling down the slide on a burlap sack at an average speed of 15 miles per hour.

Natural Resources Park and Smokey Bear
This eight-acre park, maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, includes a kayak pond, amphitheater, covered bridge, butterfly exhibit, aviary, free youth fishing, shaded picnic areas, and a turn-of-the-century cabin.  Since the 1970s, fairgoers have been greeted in the park by name by a 14 ½ foot tall Smokey Bear.

All-Ohio State Fair Band & Youth Choir
The All-Ohio State Fair Band (founded in 1925) and All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir (founded in 1963) arrive at the Ohio Expo Center just days before the Fair starts, learning all of their music in a limited time. They remain housed on-site in the Rhodes Center dormitories throughout the duration of the Fair and perform numerous times daily.

Junior Fair Board
The Junior Fair Board (JFB) comprises youth ages 16 through 21 who represent various youth organizations that participate in the Ohio State Fair each year. Youth organizations with representation in the JFB are actively involved with the annual Ohio State Fair.

{2jtab: Education }

Go beyond the fun with learning opportunities at the Fair. Swing by the Ohio Connections Academy Youth Center for dozens of educational displays, demonstrations and competitions.

Visit the “Agriculture is Cool” interactive education stations across the grounds. Ride a tractor simulator, witness eggs being hatched and learn how agriculture is a part of your daily life.

There are nearly 20,000 animals on-grounds during the Fair. Take this opportunity to learn about exotic animals and livestock. You will see more than 20 amphibians at the Snakes Alive! show with Reptile Rick and Jungle Jenny Teepen. Or, learn what goes on below the surface at the captivating Live Shark Encounter. You can milk a cow and see baby farm animals and new mothers at the OVMA Veterinary Education Center inside the Wick Pavilion. Of course, a visit to the Petting Zoo and the Fair’s various livestock buildings lets you get up close and personal with many species. Don’t forget to swing through the Natural Resources Park and stroll on the wildlife boardwalk for glimpses of Ohio’s native wildlife including bald eagles, hawks, owls, and even a river otter.  After that walk through the aviary and butterfly house for up close encounters that will be unforgettable!

Visit an authentic Civil War Encampment right here at the Ohio State Fair to discover how soldiers lived and learn about the role Ohio played in the Civil War. You’ll experience everything about soldiers’ lives during the Civil War, including how they prepared meals and made weaponry while at war.

Visit The Ohio State University’s “Phun with Physics” booth for extreme hands-on science experimentation from dropping Mentos in soda to launching a rocket.
