Shenkman was chosen along with four other state fair food vendors from across the U.S. to represent the best of the best fair foods. The deep fried buckeye, Shenkman's signature item, has become a huge seller at the Ohio State Fair, selling 30,000 buckeyes at the Fair last year.
Other state fairs and foods featured were the deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich from Texas, walleye cakes from Minnesota, homemade pies from Indiana and corn dogs from Iowa. But "none compared to the buckeye," said Shenkman.
"The deep fried buckeye is from the buckeye state, it just fits together," explained Shenkman.
Brian, with his brother Ken, made the whirlwind trip to New York City for the filming which they said was a great experience with a kind and personable cast.
Ironically enough, Shenkman's deep-fried buckeye started out as a joke. "I thought frying the buckeye would insult people," said Shenkman. But as soon as press got word that Shenkman was frying up the candy store classic, the deep-fried buckeye became a hit.
Shenkman is looking forward to participating in the Ohio State Fair this year with a goal of selling 40,000 deep fried buckeyes during the 12 days of the Fair.
