COLUMBUS– The Ohio State Fair recently awarded scholarships to several high school students and recent graduates in effort to recognize their accomplishments as junior fair exhibitors.

This year, 21 outstanding youth were awarded with $16,500 total in scholarships funded by endowments and the Youth Reserve Program. The Youth Reserve Program was established on Dec. 13, 1995, to reward junior youth exhibitors who participate in the Ohio State Fair. The Youth Reserve Program is funded by dollars received over a maximum cash award projection for each item sold at the Sale of Champions.

High school juniors and seniors during the 2011-2012 academic year, as well as recent high school graduates who are continuing their education at an accredited institution in an undergraduate course of study in any field, were eligible to apply for these awards.

Applicants were judged on scholastic standing, citizenship and leadership, Ohio State Fair participation, county fair participation and financial need. The scholarship recipients were announced during the Sale of Champions at the Ohio State Fair held on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012.

In addition to funding scholarships, the Youth Reserve Program supports carcass contests, showmanship, skillathons and outstanding exhibitor projects. To date, the Youth Reserve Program has awarded approximately 28,000 youth exhibitors more than $2 million since its inception. The scholarship program began in 1996.
