Any other potential gilts (no limit) MUST be entered into class 002, without charge. If NOT entered under an individual exhibitor, not eligible to show. Example: if you are planning to bring a Duroc, enter that gilt under Division 503, class 001. If you have a back-up gilt that is a Poland, enter her under Division 507, class 002. You will not be charged for the gilts in class 002. The number of entries you make in class 001 is how many total gilts you may bring. Any gilts that you bring to the fair must be pre-entered, either in class 001 or as a substitute in class 002.
Online entries must include FFA Advisor or 4H County Extension Professional information. Junior Exhibitor's entries will not be finalized until the confirmation is received back from either the FFA Advisor or 4H County Extension Professional.
Exhibitors in Jr. Breeding Swine must carry (be signed up for in Ohio 4H Online) the Breeding Swine Project in 4-H/FFA even if their showing county does not exhibit breeding swine projects.
Registration papers for all purebred gilts are required. Registration papers and premise ID number must be presented at the time of check-in. Originals required. No copies accepted.
All breeding swine must be ear notched. Registration papers will be checked with ear notches of animals before animals can be shown.
If entering both Junior and Open, you MUST complete entry online for BOTH JUNIOR and OPEN (both are online only).
Breeding Swine Ownership and Age Guidelines
All animals exhibited must have been actually owned and continuously cared for by the individual exhibitor including all showing rights by May 22. Ownership of an animal will be considered lost if, after May 22 of current year, the animal has been consigned or sold through an auction or any other type of transaction, even if the exhibitor “buys back” his/her animal.
All Breeding Gilts must have been farrowed December 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026.
Purebred breeding gilt classes will be shown by age; youngest to oldest.
Pen Assignments & Tack Equipment
Pens will be assigned upon arrival. Pen space limited to pigs only. NO TACK or FEED in pens. Boards may be put across the top of pens for tack and feed storage. Pens are approximately 5’ x 7’.
Each exhibitor must furnish their own feed troughs, buckets, etc. Feed and bedding will not be furnished, but will be available for purchase.
Exhibitors should arrange to feed their animals between 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
All fans and cords MUST be inspected by a fair official in the Swine Department before being plugged in. Only three (3) plug prong fans or cords will be accepted. When your fans and cords have been certified to be free of defects, they will be sealed with a band allowing them to be used. Any fan or cord found in the swine barn without inspector's band will have to be removed.
All fans will need to be turned down to low to help reduce electrical issues. Barn staff personnel reserve the right to remove fans if they are not adhering to the rule of keeping fans on low and have been provided a warning.
Additional Rules
The Ohio State Fair will follow the Ohio Department of Agriculture Livestock Exhibition Rules. No oil or oil-like show dressing will be permitted at the Ohio State Fair during the show. Water is the preferred and accepted dressing.
The Ohio Administrative Code is followed and enforced, including but not limited to:
Rule 901-19-33 – The following grooming practices are prohibited in junior market livestock shows unless those grooming practices are permitted under rule 901-19-32 of the Administrative Code:
(A) Using any substance to enhance or change the color of the livestock, including the livestock's hide or hooves;
(B) Adding any substance externally to build up, change or alter the shape or conformation of the livestock, including by way of example but not limited to rope, false hair, graphite, hemp and powders;
(C) Pigmented grooming aides or materials; and
(D) Slick clipping or body shaving of market hogs except on the ears and tails.
Rule 901-19-13 – This is a mandatory rule.
The use of the above will result in forfeiture of premiums, awards, titles and placings.
It may be necessary to test swine for sulfa and the Ohio State Fair reserves the right to do so. Backtags will be utilized for all junior shows.
Anytime a Top 5 is selected (Division or Breed), all animals could potentially come from the same class. Please be prepared to come to the showring if the animal placed before yours is selected.

Any breed failing to exhibit a total of 15 animals in the breeding classes will be cause for evaluation of continuing this breed in future shows.
All breed gilt and barrow champions, reserve champions, third, fourth, fifth and sixth may be subject to DNA testing for the presence of the stress gene, parentage verification and breed purity at the conclusion of the show.
Exhibitors of Breed Champions and Reserve Breed Champions must come to the ring for the Final Champion Drive (where applicable) or the exhibitor will be disqualified and forfeit all premiums.
If a gilt or market hog is unable to compete for division champion, breed champion or overall champion due to sickness or injury incurred after winning their respective class, the exhibitor is able to keep their class winning premiums. A committee of 3 or more fair staff or veterinarian staff will make the decision if the gilt or market hog is too sick or injured to compete. If it is determined that the hog is too injured or sick to compete, the next animal in line will move up.
Bred and Owned Swine Class – Landrace Gilts
Ownership: The animal must not have a transfer history post breeding, unless it is an exit from lease.
Exhibitor Requirements: The exhibitor must have owned or co-owned the dam at the time of breeding. Animal must be shown by owner or co-owner.
Entry Process: Entries for the Bred and Owned division will be done at the time of show entry – Junior Fair Only. Bred and Owned entries will not be accepted at the show.
Gilt Selection: The Bred and Owned Class/Division of Landrace Gilts will be showed to one judge before the Landrace Jr. Gilt Show. Landrace Jr. Gilts will be shown to a different judge following the Bred and Owned Class/Division.
Premiums: Champion and Reserve Champion Bred and Owned gilts in breed show will receive banners, provided by the Ohio Landrace Association.
These rules ensure that only the most qualified and owned animals are recognized in the Bred and Owned Swine class, maintaining the integrity and quality of the competition.
Session 1: Breeding Showmanship
(Age as of January 1 of current year)
The purpose of showmanship is to encourage young exhibitors to acquire skill and know-how in the handling of animals and to obtain information and practice in fitting and grooming them for show. See the schedule for dates and times.
In Session 1 the showmanship classes for 4-H age (9–18) will show oldest to youngest by year. For competitive balance in regard to OBE, each age group will have its own class. In order to earn a second class per age there must be more than 16 per age. If more than 16 are in a split class, heats will be needed.
All class winners will show for Division Champion – Junior (9–11), Intermediate (12–14) and Senior (15–18). The three division champions will compete for an overall Champion Showman.
Age as of January 1: North Ring – 17, 15, 13, 11, 9 | South Ring – 18, 16, 14, 12, 10
There will be showmanship for youth not eligible to show in 4-H (ages 5–8 and 19–21). These youth will NOT show for overall showmanship.
Exhibitors must show their own animal in showmanship. The judge may ask that exhibitors show another exhibitor's animal during the course of the show. Advanced entry in showmanship should be made online and will be confirmed at check in. Exhibitors are to fit their own animal.
All animals shown in showmanship must be entered and shown in their respective breeding class.
Judges will consider the general ability and know-how of exhibitors in training and handling of animals, the manner in which the exhibitor presents their animal, how they handle themselves in the ring, how to fit and groom their animal (while the grooming alone will not be emphasized), knowledge and use of good show ring equipment and correct use of equipment, accepted show ring practices, customs. Exhibitors may be asked questions about their animal and the species.
Exhibitors must show in showmanship to be considered for Outstanding Market Exhibitor and/or Outstanding Breeding Exhibitor.

511: Junior Barrow Show
Show Information
All Barrows must have Electronic USDA 840 tags. EID Only accepted. Preferred placement is in the right ear. 840 tags and Ear Notches will be used as entry identification and checked upon arrival. (https://nationalswine.com/events/ear-tags.php)
If you purchase a pig that already has an 840 USDA Electronic Tag, that is the tag that will be used. If you purchase a pig that already has an 840 USDA NON-Electronic Tag, you will leave that tag in the ear, and add an 840 USDA Electronic Tag in the other ear. The Electronic Tag will be the one that you will enter into the ShoWorks system at the time of online entry.
All exhibitors must have a premise ID (this is based on the location the pigs were raised, so the same premise ID will cover all siblings). Register at: https://agri.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/oda/divisions/animal-health/animal%20id/premise-registration-form-fillable. Don't delay as this can take a few weeks to get. The Grand Champion and Reserve Champion and top 10 overall Junior Barrows may be subject to blood and/or urine testing as required by the Ohio Department of Agriculture Exhibition Rules for Fairs and Shows.
It may be necessary to test swine for sulfa and the Ohio State Fair reserves the right to do so.
Judges may disqualify barrows showing evidence of late castration, cryptorchidism, or serious structural defects, regardless of the apparent muscling or degree of finish shown.
All breed gilt and barrow champions, reserve champions, third, fourth, fifth may be subject to DNA testing for the presence of the stress gene, parentage verification and breed purity at the conclusion of the show.
If it is determined that the hog is too injured or sick to compete, the next hog in line will move up.

When entering a barrow into either Dark Cross or Other Cross Barrow classes, you will need to enter the registration number as “0000”. It is a required field, and we understand you will not have a registration number for those barrows.
Any other potential substitution barrows MUST be entered by June 21 at 1:00 p.m. into class 200, without charge. If NOT entered under an individual exhibitor, not eligible to show.
If you bring a barrow that is not one of the six you registered in breed specific classes, or any in class 200, then your barrow is ineligible to show. If this happens, you can pay a late entry fee and show it in the OPEN Barrow Show ONLY, with proof of May 23 Ownership.
Upon arrival at the Ohio State Fair, exhibitor MUST declare which barrow(s) will be shown. The entry/entries MUST be confirmed by the Ohio State Fair staff at check-in using the original entry list to confirm. If barrow identification does NOT match original entry information, entry will not be eligible for the Junior Barrow show. Barrow is eligible to show in the Open Barrow Show (late entry fee applies if not previously entered).
WEIGHTS WILL BE DECLARED by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Weights must be the same for Junior and open show if entered in both shows. All barrows are subject to weigh backs. Premise ID will be verified at check in.
All entries must be made online at www.ohiostatefair.com. All entries must include exhibitor's name, complete address, and entry fees. Entry fee for Junior Barrows is $25 per head. Processing fees may apply.
4H/FFA Members must be registered for the project through their county extension office or FFA Chapter. If you are exhibiting a Market Barrow, you must be registered for the 4H/FFA Market Swine project, in your county, even if your county does not exhibit at a local level.
Online entries must include FFA Advisor or 4H County Extension Professional information. Junior Exhibitor's entries will not be finalized until the confirmation is received back from either the FFA Advisor or 4H County Extension Professional.
Registration papers for all purebred barrows are required. Registration information is required at the time of online entry. Registration papers must be presented at the time of check-in. Originals required. Copies will be submitted to the office; Grand and Reserve Champion original pedigrees will be kept by the OSF.
Purebred barrows must meet breed registration requirements for breed character. Breed representatives will evaluate hogs for breed character.
Crossbred barrows will be divided into dark cross (showing color pigmentation on skin) and other cross (showing no red or black pigmentation on skin) divisions. Breed classes will be finalized at check in. Any purebred without papers will be moved to the crossbred division.
All barrows must be ear notched and have an 840 USDA Electronic tag. Pigs with fresh ear notches will be disqualified.
Anytime a Top 5 is selected (Division, Breed or Final Overall), all animals could potentially come from the same class. Please be prepared to come to the showring if the animal placed before yours is selected.
Ownership
All animals exhibited must have been completely and fully owned (as evidenced by a bill of sale or registration papers) including all showing rights, and in the complete possession and continual care of the exhibitor on and after May 23 or county designated date, whichever comes first. Ownership will be considered lost if the animal has been consigned or sold to another person through an auction or any other type transaction, even if the exhibitor “buys back” his/her animal.
JUNIOR EXHIBITORS MUST SHOW THEIR OWN ANIMALS. Exceptions will be made only for exhibitors who may be physically impaired, who have two animals entered in the same class, or an exhibitor absent on show day due to other commitments. In case of these exceptions another boy or girl who is eligible to be an Ohio Junior Division Exhibitor, MUST be a resident of Ohio, may exhibit the animal with the authorization of the Department Director. If a Junior Fair Livestock Exhibitor cannot be present at the time of judging the exhibitor will need to present to the Department Director a written permission notice signed by the football coach, band director or any other person in charge of an activity that is in conflict and prevents the exhibitor from being present at the time of judging. This notice must be on official letterhead of the organization and, given to the department director 24 hours before show day, and must include name, county, birthdate, home phone number, and complete address of the exhibitor's, home and work of the person in charge of the event (i.e. football coach, band director, etc.). Also include a brief description of the conflict. EMAIL letter to OSFSwine@gmail.com.
Weights & Weigh In
All barrow weights must be declared by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Barrows must weigh between 220 lbs. and 290 lbs., declared.
Only barrows meeting weight requirements will be eligible for showing in the Junior Division classes (including showmanship classes).
All barrows will be weighed in before their class and any barrow weighing 15 pounds over or under 15 pounds of the declared weight will be automatically disqualified from the show, but will be eligible for the Open Show.
All weigh backs during the show will be plus or minus 15 pounds of the show weight.
All barrow classes will be divided after weigh-in with 12 head per class, plus or minus 3 (9–15 head).
Practice Scales: The practice scale is not ODA certified, so please take that into consideration, as these are courtesy scales only. Practice scale will be available for exhibitors to use to determine the weight of their market barrow. The weight the exhibitor will declare their market barrow must be written on the weigh card and turned in by the designated time. Please be considerate and clean up after your pig as you utilize the practice scale to keep the area and aisle clean for exhibitor and animal safety.
Partial Terminal Show and Sale
GRAND AND RESERVE OVERALL BARROWS ARE TERMINAL. All other barrows will be released for the exhibitor to take home after the show.
Exhibitors are responsible for the health and protection of their barrows. All barrows (except Grand and Reserve Breed Champions) will be released on Friday, August 7, 2026, after the conclusion of the show.

Junior Market Barrow Penning Requirements and Assignments
Pens purchased through the Buckeye Barrow Boosters Sale at the 2025 Fair must have penning assignments submitted by July 1st or pens are forfeited. Penning information can be emailed to Kelly Morgan and Matt Bennett at osfswine@gmail.com. Pens must meet penning requirements or pens will be forfeited.
Penning is based on following exhibited entries per exhibitor:
1 Pig = 1 Pen; 2 Pigs = 1 Pen
3 Pigs = 2 Pens; 4 Pigs = 2 Pens
5 Pigs = 3 Pens; 6 Pigs = 3 Pens
Pens will be assigned upon arrival. Pen space limited to pigs only. NO TACK or FEED in pens. Boards may be put across the top of pens for tack and feed storage. Pens are approximately 5’ x 7’.
All fans and cords MUST be inspected by a fair official in the Swine Department before being plugged in. Only three (3) plug prong fans will be accepted. When your fans and cords have been certified to be free of defects, they will be sealed with a band allowing them to be used. Any fan or cord found in the swine barn without the inspector's band will have to be removed.
All fans will need to be turned down to low to help reduce electrical issues. Barn staff personnel reserve the right to remove fans if they are not adhering to the rule of keeping all fans on low, and have been provided a warning.
Breakdown Procedure
The total number of classes offered in this show per breed may vary depending upon the total number of barrows shown in the breed. Classes will be equalized as evenly as possible at the discretion of Fair Management.
Individual registration papers for purebreds are mandatory at check-in. Purebred registration information is required to be entered at time of entry. Please also provide OSF Swine Department with a copy of registration.
